French Polynesia

If there is heaven on earth, there’s a good chance it could be the islands of French Polynesia. Imagine clear turquoise lagoons, hibiscus flowers and air that is perfumed with the scent of vanilla – as well as endless white sand beaches and an abundance of marine life.

Exploring in French Polynesia, which lies at the very heart of the Pacific Ocean, is the ultimate in romantic yachting. With 118 volcanic and coral islands spread across the South Pacific, French Polynesia is a glorious destination to visit. Glide through beautiful lagoons, take in the magnificent scenery of volcanic peaks and explore quaint villages like Patio. You can also climb mountains for even more spectacular views. The islands of French Polynesia cover an area that is roughly the same size of Europe, and one of the best ways to experience it is on a private yacht charter aboard SuRi. There are 188 islands and atolls to explore here, and some of the best known are Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Taha’a.
Soak up the spectacular views from the air taking in panoramic views of blue and green lagoons, as well as the famous heart shaped atoll of Tupai on our helicopter or seaplane. They’re a perfect choice to see Tahiti’s East Coast, known as the “wild side” where you’ll see the island’s caldera, and lush valleys crisscrossed with a network of rivers and waterfalls.  Or fly to Moorea, which is famous for its pierced mountain, Mount Mouaputa. Legend has it that the mountain was pierced by the spear of Pai when his evil twin Hiro, the god of thieves, tried to steal it. Look carefully and you may spot a glimpse of a pineapple plantation or fields of sugarcane and coffee.

You’ll find some of the world’s best dive sites off the coast of French Polynesia. These must-do scuba dives can be found off the islands of Bora Bora, Tahiti and Moorea to name but a few. Sample world-class surf on the stunning beaches like Matira Beach (Bora Bora), Tereia Beach (Maupiti Island), Punaauia Beach (Punaauia) and Nahoe Beach (Hiva Oa).

Expect plenty of adventure, dramatic volcanic scenery, incredible wild life and a warm welcome from the traditional island communities. The ocean is alive with sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and more than 500 species of fish. Among the coral reefs and stunning lagoons, there is an array of marine life, shipwrecks and drop offs just waiting to be explored.

Ask the crew to dock SuRi near Rangiroa, one of the largest atolls in the world, where pink sand beaches give way to crystal clear waters. Jacques Cousteau adored this area, which is one of the top dive sites in the world. SuRi is equipped with scuba and snorkeling equipment, and guests may spot tiger and hammerhead sharks, as well as dolphins, green turtles and eagle rays beyond the reef. This island, part of the Tuamotu group of islands, is sleepy and undeveloped which means that after a morning of diving or snorkeling, guests can head back to SuRi for a lunch of freshly caught fish or tuck into grilled lamb chops if they’ve worked up an appetite. If you want to slow down the pace, try paddle boarding or take the Hobie Cat out for a spin among the gin clear waters.
Discover hidden treasures on the Austral, Marquesas, Society, Tuamotu and Gambier archipelagos. For instance, the Marquesas are known for their wild landscape marked with towering waterfalls and black sand beaches, as well as archaeological treasures such as the remnants of giant tikis. Eagle-eyed visitors may even spot wild horses. Bora Bora is also well worth a visit to explore this well-known yet fascinating island. It was formed out of the crater of an extinct volcano. With the main island rising from a turquoise lagoon, lots of colorful coral around and low-lying atolls, this island will certainly take your breath away.
The cruising grounds and shores of French Polynesia and its 118 islands all offer something different, from snorkelling to diving, engaging with warm locals, exploring lagoons, or taking in breathtaking nature. Isn’t it about time you visit this South Pacific paradise?
